100 Things You DO NOT SAY OR DO TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE CANCER

copyright @Celebrate Life08 2014

Knowing what to say to those who have cancer can sometimes be very challenging. Sometimes, too much concentration on what to say can bring out horrible results.

Each comment listed here is real. There are people all over the country who have heard these words at some point and time during their bout with cancer.

I am a true witness to cruel words and actions when I went through cancer and chemotherapy treatments. It is my desire that this section will help someone weigh their words before spewing them out on unsuspecting victims.

There were days I wanted to say, “Are you serious?” but I soon discovered it was easier to shake the dust off my feet and keep it moving.

If you find that you have been guilty of making any of these comments to someone that has cancer, please do not hesitate to apologize.

I listed each comment in a category that seem to fit it more appropriately.

For Better or Worse

  1. Young lady diagnosed with cancer a few weeks from getting married, when everyone found out she had cancer, her phone rang off the hook with questions like, “so, are you still getting married?”
  2. Are you going to buy another dress? Does your fiancée still want to get married? They all forgot to ask her how she was doing.
  3. The husband that plans a weeklong trip out of town and forgets to make arrangements for his wife to get to her chemo appointments
  4. Wife going through chemo and husband says to her, “there is nothing wrong with you except you’re fat and lazy.’
  5. The husband that drops his wife off at chemo the first day and leaves. As time passes the wife wonders why he is so late returning so she calls him on his cell. His response to her is, “I can’t do this, I’m not coming back home.”
  6. The husband that says to his wife who is recuperating from a mastectomy, “Now what do you expect me to do now? I have needs also.”
  7. The husband that drops his wife off at chemo while he’s golfing
  8. The husband that spends too much time looking at the waitress boobs as if his bilateral mastectomy wife is not at the table
  9. A wife is not feeling well on one of her treatment days, she asked her husband to stay with her because she is alone. His reply was, I’ve already scheduled this golf game and I told the guys I would be there.

Do Not Forget about MEN during Breast Cancer Awareness (MEN are diagnosed with Breast Cancer Also)

How is breast cancer in men diagnosed?

This is my friend Ambrose  Alkutya Kirkland. He is the face and voice for men diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Read his amazing story: On November 01, 2001 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This condition may not raise eyebrows unless it happened to you and you happened to be a woman. In my case, breast cancer raised more than a few eyebrows since I am a man. Believe, me I was shocked and surprised. Nevertheless, I went through a mental experience that few men ever stop and think about, even in their wildest dreams. I guess you could say I found this lump many years ago. I just didn’t pay too much attention to it. I knew I had problems with my breast size, but always thought that it was due to the fact that I was heavy. Guys who are fat usually have a lot of fatty tissue, so that’s what I thought it was. I’m sure people noticed that I had larger breasts then most men, but I didn’t know that it would turn out to be cancer. I was on a mission to suppress them. I would wear small tee-shirts, sometimes wearing them two sizes too small. I would even go so far as getting an ace bandage and wrap it around my breast. The best thing that worked for me is when I wore a medium to large tee-shirt; this of course is after I had sewn up the sides to compress the breast area. This tactic seems to work for me for seven or eight years. As a matter of fact, I kept up the deception until October 2001. Keeping my breast under wrap was not an easy job as you can see. Before the biopsy I did not or would not say anything to anyone because I just thought it was a twinge of pain here and there. When I did discover the lump, it was April 2001. Ignoring it, until the late August 2001, when I started noticing little spots of blood on my tight white tees. Now I am thinking, what in the hell is going on now? A lot of things went through my mind, but a discharge from my nipple? This was the furthest thing from my mind. The spots started getting larger and larger and when woke up I would see more and more blood. The months of September and October were spent going back and forth to the doctors and taking what seemed like an endless battery of tests. I don’t see how women can get a mammogram every year. But I actually had to get a mammogram. Next I was seen by Dr. Sieloff who said it was probably a cyst. They found some calcifications from the mammogram and the doctors just wanted to make sure that was all it was. So I had a biopsy done on that Monday October, 30, 2001. Since I had my biopsy, I still wore my tee-shirts sewn up the sides, not to hide my breast but to support them. I had to wait all week for the results. Then on November 01, 2001 Dr. Sieloff called to tell me I had breast cancer. I was in shock, but not surprised because of my paternal family history of breast cancer. I needed to tell my family and close friends. I was scheduled for a double mastectomy on December 13, 2001. From June 2002 through July 2002 I endured ten and a half weeks of radiation at The Northeast Cancer Center of Florida. I was told I couldn’t have chemotherapy because of my levels of estrogen in my body and the chemo would make me even sicker. Fast forward to 2013 I met a young man online by the name of Alan Blassberg, who taught me about the BRCA gene, also known as the breast cancer gene. All those years of going back and forth to my doctors and all my doctors knowing of my family history of breast cancer and it took me going online to discover I might be a carrier of this gene. I was angry. Not at Mr. Blassberg, but at my doctors. They knew. They should have informed me. It’s terrible how men are treated in the medical field when it comes to breast cancer. Mr. Blassberg reached out and led me into the right direction. Sadly on October 19 2013 my biggest supporter, my mama Lora Kirkland passed away, but I continue to fight on with her spirit beside me. I’ve had quite a few scares with the cancer trying to come back in 2014. I’ve had a few lymph nodes removed and a small benign mass removal leading up to my BRCA gene testing in December of 2014 I’m negative for both the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes but once again I’m faced with the unknown. I have two gene mutations fairly new called MRE11A and NBN. The research available is only for women, I’ve yet to find anything out there for men. So once again I find myself a rarity in life. Time after time when we go into doctor’s offices or women images centers we never see brochures centered towards men with breast cancer. We need to do something about this. We need more research done for men with breast cancer. Men are over looked because we only make up 2% of all breast cancer cases About 2,350 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed About 440 men will die from breast cancer, That’s 440 too many. Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among men than among women. For men, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000. That’s still too many. Hopefully we can educate more people about male breast cancer. Always remember, knowledge is power.

Chamomile Tea Benefits

Chamomile tea benefits have been widely acknowledged and recognized for centuries.

Chamomile tea comes from herb Matricaria recutita, also known as manzanilla. Its flowers and leaves have been brewed for centuries and drank as a fragrant and flavorful tea. Chamomile tea’s reputation as a medicinal tea shows little signs of abatement.

Chamomile tea has been regarded as a medicinal cure-all. It had been considered a universal remedy by the ancient Egyptians. Now, researchers in England have found new evidence that the chamomile tea may actually help relieve a wide range of health ailments, including colds and menstrual cramps.

The researchers have found that drinking chamomile tea was associated with a significant increase in urinary levels of hippurate (breakdown products of certain plant-based compounds) and glycine (an amino acid).

The presence of those components appear to contribute to the following Chamomile Tea Benefits:

  • boosts the immune system and fight infections associated with colds
  • relieves muscle spasms and menstrual cramps in women
  • relaxes the nerves
  • soothes the stomach
  • reduces inflammation
  • improves liver function
  • helps relieve back pain
  • helps relieve rheumatism

Levels of both hippurate and glycine remained elevated for up to two weeks after the study participants stopped drinking the tea, indicating that the compounds may remain active for quite some time, according to the researchers.

How I Used Natural Resources to Fight GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease)
January 14, 2013, 4:03 am

I did not choose this as a diet to lose weight. It is a necessary regiment for my body to continue in a healthy state. Because of the (GERD) Gastroesophageal reflux disease. This occurs when stomach acid used for digestion repeatedly backs up, or refluxes, into the esophagus. GERD is also known as acid reflux disease.

I do not like the word disease, because when I made it through cancer victoriously, I declared I was finished with disease.  I researched GERD and the trigger foods involved and decided to take this bull by the horns and participate in my own healing.

I had to alter my diet and eating habits to allow my digestive system to heal. I will give you a snapshot of how I changed my eating habits:

  • do not eat large portions at meal times. I eat about 4 times a day in small portions every 3 hours.
  • limit my sugar intake
  • no spicy foods, fried foods (unless I fry in coconut oil)
  • eat mostly broiled, baked meats. I do not eat pork or beef
  • do not drink while I’m eating, I wait at least 30 min to an hour afterwards (only because of reflux..but you really shouldn’t drink while consuming your food.
  • before I eat I drink organic apple cider vinegar ind warm water.
  • use sea salt to season your foods

The Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Raw Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is made from nutritious, organically grown apples and retains many beneficial components because raw apple cider vinegar is not pasteurized. ACV undergoes two fermentation processes where it produces enzymes and life giving nutrients that make apple cider vinegar the powerhouse it is.

Differences Between Clear Vinegar and Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Clear vinegar has none of the benefits of raw organic apple cider vinegar. Through its processing and distilling, it’s been stripped of everything beneficial and can be detrimental to your health since it is dead instead of alive.

Only raw organic apple cider vinegar has the “mother of vinegar” that makes the vinegar so beneficial. The “mother” is made up living nutrients and bacteria. You can actually see it settled in the bottom of the bottle like sediment.

Beneficial ingredients in raw apple cider vinegar give it its power to make us feel better, look better and feel energized. Some of the beneficial ingredients in raw apple cider vinegar:

  • Potassium      – helps to prevent brittle teeth, hair loss and runny noses.
  • Pectin      – helps to regulate blood pressure and reduce bad cholesterol.
  • Malic Acid      – gives ACV the properties of being resistant to viruses, bacteria, and      fungus.
  • Calcium      – supports strong bones and teeth.
  • Ash –      gives ACV its alkaline property which aids your body in maintaining proper      pH levels for a healthy alkaline state.
  • Acetic Acid      – It appears that this acid slows the digestion of starch which can help      to lower the rise in glucose that commonly occurs after meals.

Benefits: 1 tablespoon of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar mixed in 4 ounces of purified water after a meal has been used as a natural remedy for heartburn and as a replacement for toxic heartburn medications.

  • Raw Apple Cider Vinegar may help improve bowel      irregularity, thereby removing toxins from the body at a faster rate.
  • Helps clear up skin conditions and blemishes giving a      smoother texture and complexion.
  • Raw Apple Cider vinegar may also help with joint pain      and stiffness.
    • Apple Cider Vinegar helps to break down fats so that      your body can use them rather than store them. For this reason, many diets      include ACV in their regimen.
    • Raw Apple Cider Vinegar is very strong so I always recommend diluting it with water. A good ratio is 1 tablespoon per 32 ounces of water for general use.
  • I personally use Bragg’s Organic raw apple cider vinegar on a daily basis

Christmas 2013 my husband gave me a Nutri Bullet, it transforms regular food to superfoods. The Super Food Nutrition Extractor. I drink at least 1-2 shakes per day for assurance that I’m receiving enough fruits and vegetables in my diet.

REMEMBER! I am only sharing in my blog how I chose to play the major role in healing my digestive system. By no means am I giving medical advice or suggesting that you follow my regiment

Saying “Goodbye” to the “Black Sheep Syndrome” by Jeannette Tyson Gregory
March 4, 2012, 4:59 am

A friend and I were discussing being the “black sheep of the family” a term used in families that reject a particular family member. It started out jokingly but at the end the revelation I got is this. The bible speaks about a shepherd that leaves the 99 sheep to rescue the 1. I believe if you are in Christ, there is no such thing as being a “Black Sheep” and the fact is you are under an illegitimate shepherd who abuses you.

Its time out for generational curses concerning families. The one considered as “Black Sheep” usually ends up as an alcoholic, murderer, prostitute or even an abused wife and mother. But adults abused as children can have many of these patterns to extreme degrees. Is abuse always hitting or sexual? No

Many times the worst form of abuse is parents comparing siblings, verbal abuse or just being looked over and never shown the affection of a hug or a “I love you”

The after-effects sometimes does not show up immediately but later in life when the victim is either victimized again by society or a spouse.

The “Black Sheep syndrome leaves them reeling out of control with no immediate family to turn to. This is how they end of associated with gangs, prostitution and a life of crime.

There is an answer to this generational curse as a “Black Sheep” or mishandled children is what I refer to them as. Trust is the  core of the spiritual life, of redemption, of friendship with Christ and the ever-growing happiness brought by that friendship. It is because you have never been able to trust anyone especially a parent, it is hard for you to even phantom trusting God.

The first thing you should do is ask for forgiveness of sins you committed knowingly and unknowingly. Forgive the people in your family or your life who mishandled you out of ignorance on their behalf. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and take over your entire life. Ask for a new start and that HE surround you with people who genuinely care for you and will be there for you through thick and thin.

It is a total waste of your life to sweat the small stuff so free yourself as you run into your fathers arm and declare, “I’m free, thank you father , I’M FREE!

What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost.” (Matthew 18:12-14, NIV)
